Abhyanga: The Art of Self-Massage

Vaidya Lakshmi Devi20 January 20247 min read

"The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts, and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age." - Charaka Samhita

What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of full-body oil massage. More than a beauty routine, it's considered a profound act of self-love that balances the nervous system and nourishes all seven dhatus (tissues).

Choosing Your Oil

Select oil based on your dosha: Sesame for Vata, Coconut or Sunflower for Pitta, and lighter oils like Mustard for Kapha. Our Chandan Body Oil works beautifully for most constitutions.

The Practice

Warm your oil and apply generously, starting from the scalp and working down. Use long strokes on limbs, circular motions on joints. Take 15-20 minutes to cover your entire body.

When to Practice

Ideally, practice Abhyanga in the morning before bathing. The oil is left on for 15-30 minutes before a warm (not hot) shower.
